Intersection Modelling

Modelling helps predict how intersections and roadways will operate due to changes in the road environment and plays a key role in the decision-making process for road authorities.

Intersection models can estimate important metrics such as how much traffic a new road will carry, what the possible impacts of changing and developing land uses are, whether an intersection performs better as a roundabout or traffic signals, and a variety of other factors. These concepts underpin crucial areas of traffic engineering and transportation planning including the economic justification for major projects and the planning permit application process.

We are highly experienced in developing models across a range of different software platforms and using the data to inform large traffic studies and potential road upgrades. We regularly utilise SIDRA intersection modelling software to assess individual intersections for smaller projects as well as analysing road networks for larger projects. For more complex projects we can provide broader microsimulation modelling services which are supported by SIDRA intersection analysis.

Tarneit Marketplace

Amber prepared a Traffic Impact Assessment for the Tarneit Marketplace which involves the construction of a local shopping centre within the new subdivision in Riverdale. The centre provides a supermarket and a mixture of retail and office tenancies. Amber prepared a design assessment and associated swept path diagrams, determined the parking demand of the site, and reviewed the traffic impacts of the proposal. We pride ourselves in working with the overall project team to achieve a great design outcome.

Fullwood Playing Fields

As part of the renewal of Claymore in western Sydney, a masterplan was prepared for the Fullwood Playing Fields involving improvements to the playing fields and associated facilities, as well as new parking areas and access arrangements.

Amber prepared a Traffic Impact Assessment to support the masterplan. The work involved a technical review of the proposed parking and access arrangements as well as an assessment of the parking provision based on the empirical data.

Crows Nest Townhouses

We have completed our involvement in a large townhouse development in Crows Nest. We were involved in the early stages of the project to assist the architects and development team in determining a suitable design for the basement car park. We prepared swept path diagrams and a Traffic Impact Assessment to support the development application. We subsequently prepared a Construction Traffic Management Plan and a Compliance Assessment in order to address the conditions of the permit. We work on a wide range of residential projects and regularly prepare these reports.

McCall Gardens

The McCall Gardens subdivision proposes a mixture of low to high density residential and commercial land use. The subdivision is expected to accommodate approximately 1,205 dwellings on-site and included a substantial redevelopment of the existing Ross House Community Hub. Amber prepared Traffic Impact Assessment reports for the various stages of the subdivision which reviewed the potential traffic impacts of the project and the design of the road layout. We also provided an assessment of the proposal for the Ross House Community Hub including the preparation of swept path diagrams for the car park layout, a review of the access and parking design against the requirements of the Australian Standards, and a review of the parking provision for the various uses.

Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport

Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project and it involves the construction and operation of a metro railway line around 23 kilometres in length between St Marys in the north and the Aerotropolis Core precinct in the south. The team at Amber provided specialist traffic engineering advice to the project team to help advise on the design of the road network surrounding the stations. Specialist inputs were required in relation to bus, private vehicle, cycling, and pedestrian movements to ensure the stations and surrounding public environment operate in a safe and efficient manner.

Gunnedah Service Centre

Our team regularly works on regional projects which has included the preparation of a Traffic Assessment to support a Planning Proposal for a service centre near Gunnedah. The site was proposed to accommodate a convenience store and several fast food outlets, and also accommodated a caravan park. The assessment included a traffic modelling exercise using SIDRA for nearby intersections to determine the impact of the additional vehicle movements generated by the various uses. Given the site connected to the State road network it was important for us to liaise with Transport for NSW to determine suitable access arrangements for the site based on the Austroads Guide and our relevant expertise.

Lismore Battery Energy Storage System

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are becoming more common as Australia transitions towards a more sustainable future in the energy sector. Amber recently prepared a Traffic Impact Assessment and Construction Traffic Management Plan for the Lismore BESS which is situated in McKees Hill, NSW. We prepared functional layout plans and swept path diagrams along the access route and identified traffic mitigation measures to allow the safe movement of vehicles between the local and State road network. We always design with safety in mind and worked closely with Transport for NSW to achieve a practical solution to the challenging access route for this project.

The Riverina Anglican School Masterplan

The Riverina Anglican School is expected to experience significant growth over the next few years and a masterplan was prepared in order to allow 1,505 students, 140 staff, and an Early Learning Centre to be accommodated on-site. Amber provided traffic engineering and transportation planning advice to help develop the masterplan. We prepared a Traffic Impact Assessment which included a SIDRA intersection modelling analysis of the nearby intersections based on traffic survey data collected in the area. We also prepared a Car Parking Demand Assessment to determine the level of parking required to meet the future demands. School projects require careful consideration to ensure vulnerable road users are seperated from vehicle movements and we always design with safety in mind.

Drouin Childcare Centre

Amber Organisation staff prepare a Traffic Impact Assessment for the 118 place childcare centre located in regional Victoria. Key considerations included the provision of car parking against the requirements of the Planning Scheme and the design of the car park to ensure it operates in a safe and efficient manner. Our Director also provided expert witness services to VCAT to support the development.

Huntlee Self-Storage Unit

Our team prepared a Traffic Impact Assessment for the large self-storage unit in Huntlee. We utilised our existing survey data for similar developments and worked with our client to determine a suitable parking provision for the site. We prepared swept path diagrams and reviewed the access arrangements for the development to ensure vehicles are able to safely enter and exit the site and access the loading areas.
